FEATURED ARTIST OF THE MONTH
1. Where did you get the name AMISTAD and what’s the meaning of it? Amistad basically means “friendship” in Spanish. We chose the name Amistad because the members of the band met at Amistad Street somewhere in their Village and decided to form the band in that same street as well. 2. Can you tell us a brief history of your band? Over the past years, a group of young and talented men has been trying to make its way to the music industry. Amistad was formed way back in 2005 and have been writing, recording and performing songs to entertain people, both the young and young at hearts, with pinoy rock music, and made innovations indeed. The band plays rock, fusion rock and even mellow rock. Amistad plays at various bars across the metro and being invited at parties to even reach out their music to everyone. Amistad friends and some supporters have been waiting for their debut album to be finally launched. On March 5, 2011, the band will finally launch their self produced album and will finally make it to the scenes, as these young men dreamed ever since. The band is composed of four equally talented men namely John Campita on Vocals, Luj Palma on Guitar, Kevin Palma on Bass and RJ Pineda on Drums, who love to perform even to littlest occasions. For them, as long as one appreciates their music, they wouldn’t stop making music. Aside from their love for music, the band also likes to eat. After they perform to concerts and gigs, they see to it that they will eat afterwards and reward themselves with good food.
3. Musical Influence? Breaking Benjamins, Stone Temple Pilots, Dream Theater, Steve Vai, P.O.T, Kapatid, The Dawn, Greyhoundz and many, many more. 4. What is your favorite song/s from your EP and why? “Natutulog na Damdamin” and “Pasa” are our favorite songs in our album. Though we really had a hard time picking our top songs because we love how we executed all our songs in our album and we think every song should be heard by the buying crowd. Meaning, the album will be worth it! 5. What are you doing guys aside from being a band member? John is currently taking up AB- Animation at De La Salle College of Saint Benilde to pursue his passion for drawing. He likes spending time with his family and friends during his free time as he finds it relaxing to be with them even during weekdays. Luigi is a fan of the NBA and he sees to it that he shouldn’t miss a single game in a single day. Luigi is called “Luj” by his friends because “Luj” sounds really tough and his name compliments his looks.
Kevin stands as the driver of the band. When the band’s driver is on leave, he usually takes over because he has this “daddy driving skills” to take care of the band when they travel. Other than that, Kevin is a wedding photographer and he likes to take pictures of Amistad. Kevin’s musical influences are Louie Talan, Nino Avenido and John Mayer. He is a fresh graduate of BS-Tourism in De La Salle College of Saint Benilde.
RJ is the youngest member of the group. This guy is very talented that he was featured as one of Promil’s Gifted Children. He’s fond of joining classical piano competition (NAMCYA), and wins the contest when he joins. Other than that, he taught Kevin, his band mate how to play the bass, the guitar, the piano and drums as well. Aside from Amistad, RJ plays for Church as well.
6. What is your greatest achievement as a band?
The band’s debut album was 4 years in the making. We waited patiently and waited for the right time narin. 5 years as band members of Amistad is such a great achievement narin to us because we remained strong throughout the years. 7.
